Erskine Sweeps Double Header from Saint Andrews

Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet swept a Conference Carolinas double header from Saint Andrews Friday afternoon, winning game one 9-6 and game two 6-3.

Game One (Erskine 9 Saint Andrews 6)

Erskine (23-15, 11-9) would take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Zac McCarthy (Lyman, SC, Byrnes HS) would lead off with a double and then score on a home run by Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS).  The Knights would score a run in the top of the second to cut the lead to one.  Saint Andrews (9-29, 3-17) would take a 5-2 lead when they exploded for four runs in the third inning.

In the bottom of the third, Josh Purvis (Valdosta, GA, Armstrong Atlantic University) would hit a one out double and later score on a single by Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS).  After a walk to Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS) to load the bases, Luke Danielewicz (Spartanburg, SC, Dorman HS) would hit a a sacrifice fly to score Willingham to cut the Knight lead to one.  Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would get hit by a pitch to load the bases once again, and Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) would clear the bases with a triple to left center field to give Erskine the lead.  Herring would then score on a single by Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) to finish the scoring for the Fleet and make it an 8-5 game.  Leading 9-5 in the eighth inning, the Knights would score a run to cut the lead to three, but Kit Carter (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) came into the game to stop the rally and help Erskine hold on for the win.

Willingham led the Fleet offense going 2-4 with a home run and two RBI’s.  Corn, Huff, and Spence each added two hits in the win.  Taylor Wall (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Prep HS) (4-4) picked up the win allowing one run of five hits in four and two-thirds innings of relief work.  Carter (5) picked up the save striking out two in one and two –thirds innings of work.

Game Two (Erskine 6 Saint Andrews 3)

In the bottom of the second inning Corn would lead off the inning with a double down the right field line and then score on a double by Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) to give the Fleet a 1-0 lead.  Erskine would explode for five runs in the fourth on RBI doubles by Wooten, Herring, Pervis and RBI singles by Corn and Spence.  Saint Andrews would score two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, but Erskine would hold on for the win.

Wooten was a perfect 3-3 with a double and RBI, while Galliher was 2-3 with two doubles and a run batted in.  Purvis, Corn, and Willingham had two hits each for the Fleet.  Heath Gray (Greer, SC, Byrnes HS) (5-1) picked up the win allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out 10 in another complete game performance.

The teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a single game starting at noon.
