Erskine wins 1 of 2 on spring break trip

Hilton Head Island, SC – Erskine won one of two matches on Saturday at Hilton Head Island Tennis and Beach Resort in non-conference men’s tennis action.  Erskine started the day in grand fashion beating Hartwick College 9-0 in their season opener.  That evening Erskine lost 9-0 to the Tigers of DePauw University.  Erskine now stands at 4-10 on the season.

Against the Hawks of Hartwick College, Erskine opened the match by winning all three doubles matches.  Angelo Ciarrocchi (Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Theodor Herzl High School) and Vincent Chauvette (Levis, Quebec, Canada, Ecole Pointe-Levy) teamed up at #1 doubles to down Jeff Boyd and Brian Redder 8-3.  At #2 and #3 doubles, Erskine did not surrender a point, winning both matches 8-0.

In singles play, Erskine swept the six matches in straight sets.  Ciarrocchi, Connor Roy (Greenville, SC, Travelers Rest High School), and Matthew Twitty (West Columbia, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) defeated their Hartwick opponents 6-0, 6-0.  Chauvette and Hoatson won 6-1 and 6-0 while Jack West (Belton, SC, Emerald High School) beat Redder at #3 singles 6-2, 6-1.

In the evening match, DePauw edged Erskine in all three doubles matches 8-6 to take an early 3-0.  Erskine had three opportunities to win a match, but could not prevail losing all six singles matches.  Chauvette and West went three sets, both losing the tie-breaker 10-6.  DPU’s Noah Swiler slipped by James Hoatson (Harding, South Africa, Maritzburg High School) at #4 singles 6-4, 6-4 to secure the 9-0 victory for the Tigers.

Erskine travels to Gaffney, South Carolina, tomorrow to play the Saints of Limestone College.  The match is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
