Fleet rally falls short, losing 14-10 to Franklin Pierce

Box Score Winter Park, FL – Trailing 10-3 at halftime, the Erskine Flying Fleet fought back to pull within two goals of Franklin Pierce College before losing 14-10 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action at Richard Evans Field on the campus of Saint Leo University.  Erskine drops to 2-7 overall and Franklin Pierce moves to 2-1 on the season.

Despite an equal number of shots by each team in the opening half, Franklin Pierce outscored Erskine 10-4 to take a comfortable lead into the locker room at the half.  Samantha Burns (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head Island High School) scored the game’s first goal just a minute and half into the game to give Erskine a 1-0 advantage.  Franklin Pierce responded by scoring the next three goals.  Alesia Jerrells (Blythewood, SC, Blythewood High School) got the Fleet back to within one scoring a free position goal after being fouled.  At that point, Franklin Pierce took control of the game scoring the next five goals.  Burns broke the Fleet’s scoring drought with her second goal of the game with eight minutes left to play in the opening period.  Franklin-Pierce scored the half’s last two goals, including one by Mary Kate Stille in the waning seconds.

Erskine roared back in the second half scoring two goals in the first five minutes to make the score 10-5.  After surrendering a goal, Erskine ripped off four more goals to close within two at 11-9.  Unfortunately Erskine made two costly penalties resulting in two free position goals for Franklin Pierce.  Jerrells scored the Fleet’s last goal with a minute remaining to make the final score 14-10.

Erskine led in several statistically categories.  The Flying Fleet outshot Franklin Pierce 28 to 20 while also holding a slight advantage in ground ball pick-ups at 21-17.

Jerrells led the Fleet with 4 goals and 1 assist while Burns notched three goals with one assist.

Ashley Lamagdeleine led Franklin Pierce with a game-high 5 goals.  Courtney Weber added three goal with 3 assists.
Erskine plays Saint Leo University tomorrow night starting at 7:00 p.m.
