Fleet shoot down the Hawks 16-8

Box Score Due West, SC – Erskine’s Samantha Burns (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head Island High School) scored a game-high 5 goals and assisted on two other goals in leading the Erskine Flying Fleet (2-6) to 16-8 victory over the visiting Shorter College Hawks (8-2) in non-conference women’s lacrosse action at Huggins Field.

Erskine began the game scoring the first four goals to force Shorter Coach Brittni Dulaney to call a timeout.  Senior Alesia Jerrells (Blythewood, SC, Blythewood High School) led the charge scoring two goals and setting up junior Von McKenzie (Greenville, SC, Woodmont High School) on the other two Fleet goals.

Following the Shorter timeout, Erskine added three more goals, two by Burns and the other by senior Denise Zani (Greenville, SC, Eastside High School) with Jerrells earning the assist.

Shorter finally answered the Fleet attack with back-to back goals to cut the Fleet lead to 7-2.

Erskine countered with two more goals while Shorter added one last goal before the horn at halftime to make the score 9-3.

Erskine opened the second half on a 5-1 run to invoke the mercy rule on an opponent for the first time in the program’s history.  Shorter rebounded to outscore the Fleet 4-2 over the last ten minutes of the game but the outcome was already decided as the Fleet won 16-8.
