Box Score Due West, SC – Under sunny blue skies Erskine College lost to Shepherd University 24-10 this afternoon in non-conference women’s lacrosse action at Huggins Field. With the loss, the Flying Fleet drop to 1-6 on the season. Meanwhile, Shepherd University remains perfect on the year at 7-0.
After falling behind early 9-1, Erskine rebounded to outscore Shepherd 6-4 to close out the half trailing 13-7. Freshman
Samantha Burns (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head Island High School) jumpstarted the comeback with two goals within thirty seconds. Burns scored her first goal at the 14:31 mark on a free position tally and scored just 28 seconds later cutting through the Shepherd defense. After surrendering a goal, Erskine’s
Denise Zani (Greenville, SC, Eastside High School) found the back of the net with a little over ten minutes left in the half to make the score 10-4. Burns scored the Fleet’s final three goals of the half.
Erskine opened the second half with a quick goal by Zani off a free position shot but Shepherd rallied to score the game’s next seven goals to take a commanding 20-8 lead. Erskine continued to play hard scoring two more goals, one by
Alesia Jerrells (Blythewood, SC, Blythewood High School) and the other by Burns, to make the final score 24-10.
Burns scored a season-high 6 goals in the game while Jerrells netted two goals and one assist.
Hanna Wharton led Shepherd University with 5 goals and teammate Nicole Ruane had 3 goals along with a game-high 4 assists.
Erskine goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Overley (Clayton, NC, Blythewood High School) recorded 11 saves on 35 shots. Shepherd’s Lily Schmulowitz faced 17 shots earning 7 saves.
Erskine hosts Shorter College this Saturday with game time set for 2:00 p.m. Admission is free to all Erskine home lacrosse events.
