Erskine falls to Newberry 6-3

Due West, SC – Erskine fell to in-state rival Newberry College this afternoon 6-3 in non-conference men’s tennis action at the Erskine College Tennis Complex.  With the win, Newberry climbs to 10-6 on the year while the Flying Fleet slip to 3-8.

Following the doubles matches, Newberry led 2-1 over Erskine.  Newberry won #2 and #3 doubles while Erskine’s #1 doubles pair Angelo Ciarrocchi (Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Theodor Herzl High School) and Vincent Chauvette (Levis, Quebec, Canada, Ecole Pointe-Levy) crushed Michael Saunders and Vinicus Botelho 8-1.

In the singles matches, Newberry won four of the six matches to win the match 6-3.  Newberry’s Saunders and Botelho rebounded from their doubles loss to win their singles matches in straight sets and Cal Loveridge hung on to beat James Hoatson (Harding, South Africa, Maritzburg High School) 6-2, 7-5 to secure the crucial fifth point.  Erskine’s Jack West (Belton, SC, Emerald High School) won by retirement after winning the first set 6-0 over Mohammad Chakir.  Freshman Connor Roy (Greenville, SC, Travelers Rest High School) won his first set in a tie-breaker 7-6 (7-2) then cruised to a 6-2 win in the second set to claim the point at #5 singles.  At #6 singles, Matthew Twitty (West Columbia, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) rebounded after losing his first set to win the second set but lost the decisive third set 6-4.

Erskine travels to Milledgeville, Georgia tomorrow to play Georgia College.  Match time is set for 2:30 p.m.
