Due West, SC – The Royals of Queens University used their inside muscle to power their way to a 76 to 57 victory over the Erskine Flying Fleet this afternoon in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action at Belk Arena.
Sarah Myatt and Shonice Pettaway both finished with “doubles-doubles.” Myatt had a team-high 20 points and a game-high 15 rebounds while Pettaway finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. As a team, Queens out-rebounded Erskine 48 to 34.
Erskine was led by senior Porsha Morgan (Columbus, GA, LaGrange Academy) with a game-high 21 points. Morgan was the only Fleet player to reach double-figures in scoring. Sophomore Jana Dixon (Conyers, GA, Heritage High School) bounced back after hitting her head hard on the floor early in the first half to finish with 9 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Lindsey Weidenaar (Evans, GA, Lakeside High School) came off the bench to hit three 3-point shots to also finish with 9 points.
The game started promising for the Fleet as they took an early 6-2 lead, only to see Queens score the next five points to take their first lead of the game at 7-6. Myatt scored four points on back-to-back baskets to tie the game and Dyonna Battle hit one of two free throws to put the Royals ahead.
The lead exchanged hands several times over the next several minutes until Queens scored eight unanswered points to take a 19 to 11 advantage. The Fleet quickly responded by scoring three consecutive 3-point baskets in a minute. Andrienne Bannerman (Watha, NC, Pender High School)started the run with a three from the corner and Morgan added the next two to give the Fleet a one point lead at 20 to 19 with 7:55 left in the opening period. Queens outscored Erskine 14 to 5 over the final seven minutes to take an eight point lead at 33 to 25 into the locker room.
Queens quickly stormed out to a fifteen point to open the second half forcing two Fleet turnovers and grabbing three offensive rebounds to take a 42-27 lead in the first three minutes of play. Erskine trimmed the Queens lead back to single-digits a few minutes later on a 3-point basket for Weidenaar but Queens used another run to extend their lead back to fifteen. Queens won the game by nineteen at 76-57.
Queens inside play led to 21 second chance points compared to just seven points for the Fleet.
Erskine falls to 9-11 overall and 6-6 in conference while Queens improves to 6-14 overall and 4-7 in conference.
Erskine travels to North Greenville University on Monday then returns home to host the Bobcats of Lees-McRae this Wednesday at Belk Arena. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
