Erskine Lacrosse earns first home victory; defeating Converse 12-10

Box Score Due West, SC – It was a historic day at Huggins Field as the Erskine Lacrosse Team picked up their first ever victory at home by edging the Valkyries of Converse College 12-10 in Conference Carolinas women’s lacrosse action.  It was also Coach Bob Dachille’s first victory as head coach of the Flying Fleet.  Erskine is now 1-2 overall and in conference.  Converse slips to 1-1 overall and in conference.

Erskine opened the game on a 6-0 run.  Sophomore Kelly Dalziel (Ocean, NJ, Ocean Township High School) led the charge scoring two of the Fleet’s six goals and freshman Samantha Burns (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head Island High School) also had a goal and an assist to help spark the run.

Converse finally tallied a mark with a little over nine minutes to play on a free position goal by Brianna Hoffman.  A little over a minute later Sydnie Hickey added another goal for Converse to keep the game close at 6-2.

Erskine’s final two goals of the half came within a minute of each other.  Senior Alesia Jerrells (Blythewood, SC, Blythewood High School) made a nice move to score her first goal of the game then found Anna Dailey (Clinton, SC, Clinton High School) for Erskine’s next tally.

Converse scored the last two goals of the half to enter halftime trailing 8-4.

The teams exchanged three goals each to open the second half to make the score 11-7.  Converse pulled to within two goals at 11-9 midway through the second half on back-to-back goals by Katie Wright and Hoffman.

At that point, Erskine began to work the clock, slowing down the game.   Burns added one more goal as Erskine limited Converse to one goal over the last ten minutes of play.

Jerrells led the Fleet attack with three goals and three assists.  Dalziel scored three goals as well.

Converse’s Hoffman led all scorers with four goals on the day.

Erskine hosts Florida Southern University on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
