Box Score Belmont, NC- Playing on the road, Belmont Abbey outscored Erskine 12-2 in the second half to earn a 20-6 win over the Erskine College Flying Fleet this afternoon at Alumni Field. Erskine falls to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in Conference Carolinas while The Abbey moves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas.
Trailing 8-4 at halftime, Erskine’s
Alesia Jerrells (Blythewood, SC, Blythewood High School) scored the first goal of the second half to pull to within 8-5. The Crusaders scored two straight to extend the lead to 10-5. Erskine's
Samantha Burns (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head Island High School) scored what turned out to be the Flying Fleet's last goal with 25:21 left to close the lead to 10-6, but the Crusaders scored the ten straight unanswered goals to coast to the 20-6 victory.
The first half was a close contest as Burns scored the game’s first goal to give Erskine the early lead, but the Abbey netted the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead. Erskine’s
Kelly Dalziel (Ocean, NJ, Ocean Township High School) knotted the game at two less than a minute later, but the Abbey’s Lindsay Connolly moved them on top for good with a free position shot at the 21:07 mark. After four consecutive goals by Belmont Abbey, Jerrells answered with her first goal of the day.
Denise Zani (Greenville, SC, Eastside High School) added one more goal before the half for the Fleet.
Belmont Abbey outshot Erskine 41-17 and also won the battles in draw controls (16-12) and ground balls (34-19).
Burns and Jerrells led Erskine with two goals apiece, while Dalziel and Zani both had one. Dalziel and Jerrells also had one assist.
BAC’s Elyse Mohn led all scorers with 5 goals and Emily Hudgins and Megan Patton had 4 goals each.
Erskine hosts in-state conference rival Converse College on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
