Box Score Due West, SC – Erskine had four starters reach double-figures in scoring as they beat conference opponent Pfeiffer University 79 to 74 at home. With the win, Erskine improves to 8-16 overall and 4-9 in conference while Pfeiffer slips to 11-11 overall and 5-7 in conference.
Junior
Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Holy Cross High School) led the charge the Fleet with a team-high 18 points and 8 rebounds. Senior
Filip Pejovic (Prijepolje, Serbia, Prijepoljska Gimnazija) and
Casey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Simon Kenton High School) each contributed 14 points and
DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School) had 11 points and 4 assists.
The Falcons got an impressive game from Danny Smith with 31 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the floor, including 3 of 4 from behind the arc. He was also 12 of 16 from the free throw line. Reggie Hollinger was the only other Pfeiffer player to reach double-digits with 16 points. He also pulled down a team-high 5 rebounds.
Erskine opened the game scoring the first ten points on 3-point baskets by Casey Sorrell and
Travis Liner (Charlotte, NC, Northside Christian Academy) and two baskets by Hall, including a breakaway slam dunk off a steal. Following a put-back by Josh Humphrey off his own miss for Pfeiffer’s first points of the game, Erskine extended their lead to double-digits on two jump shots beyond the arc by Liner and
Brandon Bjerre (Columbia, MD, Hammond High School). Erskine maintained their double-figure lead to close out the opening period with a 40 to 24 lead.
Pfeifer made frantic run in the final four minutes of the game to pull within a point at 73-72 with a 1:11 remaining. Danny Smith triggered the 12-2 run with a drive and a foul to trim the lead to single-digits at 71-63. After exchanging free throws, Erskine turned the ball over on their next two possessions resulting in four more points for the Falcons. Smith then hit a 3-pointer to get Pfeiffer within one point. Erskine hit 6 of 8 free throws in the final minute to seal the 79 to 74 victory.
Erskine steps out of conference to play Johnson & Wales in Charlotte on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
