Box Score Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (5-1) sailed past the Mariners of the College of Coastal Georgia 63 to 51 and to their best start since joining the NCAA Division II ranks in 1995.
Erskine got off to a slow start, missing their first seven shots, and fell behind 6-0. After a free throw by junior Mike Gabbard put the Fleet on the board, Erskine captured their first lead of the game on back-to-back 3-point baskets by junior DeShaun Hall and senior Corey Sorrell at 7-6.
The lead would exchange hands six more times before Corey Sorrell scored on a layup to put the Fleet up for good with over three minutes remaining in the opening half. Senior Jake Haslam drilled two 3-point baskets in the final two minutes to give Erskine an 8 point lead at 34 to 26 heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Mariners never seriously threatened in the second half, closing to within five points twice in the early portion of the period, as Erskine won 63 to 51.
Freshman Roderick Perkins scored a career-high 17 points while pulling down 7 rebounds. Senior Corey Sorrell finished with 16 points and a team-high 9 rebound. Hall had 15 points and 5 steals.
For the Mariners, Kentorey Johnson recorded a double-double with a team-high 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. P.J. Reason also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Mariners won the rebounding battle 48 to 40.
Erskine opens their post-Christmas portion of their schedule on New Year’s Day at Brevard College.
