Box Score Mount Olive, N.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet lost on the road to the conference-leading Trojans of Mount Olive College 79-49 in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action at Kornegay Arena.
While the Fleet (0-6, 0-2) never led in the game, Erskine shot an impressive 37% from the floor, including 7 of 14 from behind the 3-point line, to trail only by eight points, 38-30, at halftime. The Fleet were within two points several times in the opening period despite being outrebounded 13 to 27 and allowing 17 points off turnovers. Freshman sharpshooter
Tori Whittenberg (Mauldin, SC, Mauldin High School) hit 4 of 6 from long range while junior guard
Rosa Powell (Lilburn, GA, Brookwood High School) came off the bench to score 8 points, going 2 from 3 from behind the arc and sinking both her free throw attempts.
The Trojans quickly seized control to open the second half scoring the period’s first ten points. The Trojans shot a sizzling 52% (14 of 27) from the floor, including 5 of 8 from 3-point land. Unfortunately, the Fleet lost their hot-hand going 7 of 29 from the floor. The Trojans easily won the battle on the boards 25 to 12, 52 to 25 overall.
Whittenberg led the Fleet with 18 points.
Andrienne Bannerman (Watha, NC, Pender High School) finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds while
Tara Potter (Sherrills Ford, NC, Bandys High School) scored 6 points while pulling down a team-high 8 boards.
The Trojans had four players reach double-digits, led by Kirksten Mitchell’s game-high 21 points. Tamara Nesmith was one of two Trojans to earn a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Jasmine McDonald recorded the other double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Joneiqua Gary came off the bench to add 13 points for the Trojans.
Erskine’s next game is just a short trip down the road to play local rival Lander University this Tuesday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
