Box Score Mount Olive, N.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet remained perfect on the road slaying conference foe the Trojans of Mount Olive College this afternoon in men’s basketball action at Kornegay Arena.
All five Erskine starters finished in double-figures, led by Corey Sorrell’s 23 points and 9 rebounds. Junior guard
DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School) earned his first double-double of the season, the third of his career, with a season-high 18 points and game-high 10 boards. Senior
Jake Haslam (Lithia, FL, Tampa Preparatory School) contributed 13 points and 5 assists while freshman
Roderick Perkins (Smyrna, GA, Campbell High School) and junior
Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Boone County High School) had 11 and 10 points respectively. Gabbard also had 6 assists along with 3 steals.
The Fleet defense limited the Trojans to just 37.5% shooting from the field, including a paltry 6 of 32 (18.8%) from 3-point range. The Trojans’ two-leading scorers came off bench; Kendall Hargrove had 16 points and Ewon Wright added 12 more.
After exchanging points through the first four minutes of play, the Trojans snatched a six point at 13-7 punctuated by a 3-point basket by Darrell Patterson. The Trojans extended their lead to as many as ten before the Fleet roared back to take a seven point lead at 33-26 at the half. After a backdoor layup by Haslam,
Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Holy Cross High School) scored three consecutive baskets to lead the Fleet on a 19-0 run and take 33-24 lead. Erskine never trailed again in the game.
The Fleet opened the second Fleet by extending their lead to double-digits behind back-to-back 3-point baskets by Hall and Haslam. The Trojans got back to within six points midway through the second half but the Fleet responded with 10 unanswered points to stretch their lead back to double-digits. Erskine coasted to the 77-65 win at that point.
With the win, Erskine improves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference while Mount Olive College slips to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in conference.
For the first time this season, Erskine won the battle on the boards 38-32.
Erskine concludes the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule this Tuesday against the College of Coastal Georgia. Erskine opened their season against Coastal Georgia with a 91-87 victory. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
