Erskine suffers first loss

Box Score Due West, S.C. – Erskine suffered their first loss of the season dropping a 72-62 decision to Queens University tonight in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action at Belk Arena.  The loss also snaps a 3-game win streak for the Flying Fleet (3-1, 1-1).

Queens used their superior size in the front court while the Fleet uncharacteristically turned the ball over a season-high 19 times.  Queens outrebounded the Fleet 47-32, resulting in 18 second chance points.  Queens’ Brent Evans, a 6’8 forward, led the charge posting a double-double with a game-high 30 points and 11 rebounds.  Forward Antonio Stabler added 15 points along with 8 rebounds.

Erskine was led by senior Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Holy Cross High School), who dropped in a team-high 21 points.  Freshman Roderick Perkins (Smyrna, GA, Campbell High School) had a stellar game, contributing 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 blocks.  Point guard Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Boone County High School) also reached double-digits with 14 points while dishing out 6 assists.

Outside of the opening minutes of the game, Erskine never led in the game.  After trailing by nine at halftime, Erskine crawled within two points at 50-48 midway but missed an opportunity to tie the game missing a layup off a steal by Corey Sorrell with a little over eight minutes remaining.  A few minutes later Erskine had another chance to tie the game but failed to convert on two free throw attempts.

Queens converted their free throws in the closing minutes to extend their lead and win the game by ten at 72-62.

Erskine plays two more games before the Christmas break.  This Saturday the Flying Fleet travel to play Mount Olive College.  Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.  On Tuesday, Erskine hosts the College of Coastal Georgia in a rematch of the season opener that Erskine won 91-87.  Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.
