Erskine beats archrival Anderson University 87-72

Box Score Anderson, S.C. – Led by Corey Sorrell’s 23 points, the Erskine Flying Fleet remained perfect on the season beating archrival Anderson University 87-72 tonight in non-conference men’s basketball action at the Abney Center.

All five Erskine starters finished in double-figures.  Junior DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School) and freshman Roderick Perkins (Smyrna, GA, Campbell High School) each had 16 points and a team-high 6 rebounds while junior Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Boone County High School) had 14 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists.  Sharpshooter Jake Haslam (Lithia, FL, Tampa Preparatory School) finished with 11 points, going 3 for 9 from long range.

The Trojans got a game-high 26 points from Denzail Jones.  Chandler Hash, who had 10 points, was the only other Trojan to reach double-digits in scoring.

While the score remained tight in the opening minutes, Erskine never trailed in the game and used a 12-2 run stretch their lead to double-digits midway through the first period.  The Trojans closed to within three points but DeShaun Hall drained a 3-point shot followed by two free throws to ignite a run that pushed the Fleet lead back to double-digits.  Erskine took 40-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Trojans never seriously threatened as the Fleet extended their lead to as many as 22 points in the second half, cruising to the 87-72 victory.

Erskine shot an impressive 51% from the field, including 12 of 30 from behind the arc, while harassing the Trojans into 19 turnovers.

Erskine travels to Belmont, North Carolina, this Saturday to play conference foe Belmont Abbey College.  Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
