Box Score Brunswick, GA--Trailing by seven points at halftime, the Erskine men's basketball team went on a 29-12 run to open the 2nd half as they fought past the College of Coastal Georgia on Saturday afternoon, 91-87. Senior Corey Sorrell led four Fleet in double figures with 26 points. A trio of juniors joined Sorrell in double figures with Deshaun Hall scoring 20, Mike Gabbard 17, and Jake Haslam 14. The win was Erskine's first opening season victory in five years.
The Fleet struggled from the field in the 1st half hitting only 12 of 33 shots (36%) and misfiring on 2 of 15 three point attempts. The Mariners took a 44-37 lead into the halftime break, their largest of the game. Erskine started red hot in the 2nd half with Sorrell dominating inside and Hall and Haslam connected on their first two three attempts. Erskine built the lead to 68-56 with 11:09 remaing in the game. The Mariners breathed new life 4:15 remaining with Erskine leading 80-71. Mike Gabbard picked up his 5th personal foul on a three-point attempt that cut the lead to 80-74 and saw the Fleet lose the primary ballhandler. Sorrell took over for the Fleet with two baskets and two made free throws as they pushed the lead to 86-79. But three consecutive Erskine turnovers allowed the Mariners to cut to 88-85 with 38 seconds remaining. Sophomore Justin Cofer converted one of two free throws to put the lead at 89-85 and a subsequent Sorrel breakaway layup with four seconds remaining pushed the lead to 91-85 before Coastal Georgia scored on a basket that appeared to be well after the horn.
Erskine hit on 11-30 from the three point line, but 9-15 in the 2nd half. Erskine forced 21 turnovers by the Mariners while only turning it over 13 times. Gabbard and Hall led the Fleet rebounding efforts with 6 each.
Erskine will be back on the road Wednesday when they travel to archrival Anderson UNiversity for their only match-up of the season. Tip-off is set for 8 pm.
