Erskine picks up vital road win; downs King 3-2

Box Score Bristol, Tenn. – Erskine picked up a vital road victory today winning 3-2 over King College in Conference Carolinas men’s soccer action at Parks Field.  With two conference games remaining, the win moves the Flying Fleet (6-5-3, 5-2-1) a step closer to hosting a first round game in the Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament to start October 30th.

Erskine tallied the first goal of the game in the 12th minute as sophomoreAndrew Settlemire (Beaufort, SC, Beaufort High School)headed Jonathan Rutter’s corner kick just inside the far post.  It was Settlemire’s ninth goal of the season.

King’s Thomas Dube tied the game at 1-1 in the 24th minute after racing down the left side and blasting the ball inside the far post.

The Fleet countered quickly with Jack Kimber (Manchester, England, Priestnall High School) converting on a penalty kick just four minutes later for his fifth goal of the season.  The game would remain scoreless through the rest of the opening period.

King caught a break in the opening minutes of the second period when Erskine was called for a foul in the box.  King’s Pete Griffith drilled the penalty kick home to tie the game again at 2-2.

Erskine recorded the final goal of the game in the 61st minute when senior Jay Lang (Myrtle Beach, SC, Myrtle Beach Christian)intercepted a pass from the King goalkeeper and squarely put the ball in the open goal.  For Lang, it was his fourth goal of the year and his second game-winner.

Erskine goalkeeper Roberto De La Vina (Oviedo, Spain, San Ignacio) allowed 2 goals on 15 shots and recorded 9 saves.

Erskine snaps a two-game losing skid.

Erskine plays their last non-conference game this Saturday against local in-state rival Newberry College.  Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
