Erskine ends home stand with loss

Box Score Due West, SC – Playing their fourth game in seven days, the Erskine Flying Fleet concluded their four-game home stand with a loss to the Cobras of Coker College 73-47 in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action at Belk Arena this afternoon.  The loss drops the Fleet to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in conference while Coker College improves to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in conference.

Erskine’s Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Northern Kentucky University) led all scorers on the day with 19 points and 6 rebounds.  Sophomore Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Western Kentucky University) finished with 9 points.

Coker had four players reach double-digits, led by Sharod Williams’ 16 points.  Andrew Morris tossed in five 3-point baskets to finish with 15 points and Austin Harper knocked down 12 points.  Charles West came off the bench to contribute 15 of the 23 points scored by the Cobra reserves.

The game remained close through the early portions of the game with the Fleet grabbing an early five point lead.  Gabbard scored the first points of the game on an old-fashion three-point play with a drive to the basket.  Following a bucket by Miller for the Cobras, DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC) and Brandon Quarles (Landrum, SC, Landrum High School) sank back-to-back shots to put the Fleet up 7-2.

Coker regained the lead midway through the half and lengthened their lead to double-digits at the end of the opening period.  After a Sorrell 3-point basket at the six minute mark, Coker closed out the half on a 13-3 run to take their largest lead of the game at 40 to 28 into the locker room.  West converted a three-point play to start the Cobra run then hit back-to-back three point shots sandwiched between two baskets by Williams.

Coker opened the second half by hitting four consecutive three-point shots, three by Morris, to take a commanding lead at 51 to 30.  The Fleet never threatened after that as Coker cruised to the 73-47 victory.

Erskine will get some much needed rest with only two games on tap next week.  On Tuesday the Fleet travel up the mountain to Banner Elk, North Carolina, to play Lees-McRae College.  On Saturday, Erskine stays on the road as they travel to Wilson, North Carolina, to take on the Bulldogs of Barton College.
