Box Score Due West, SC – North Greenville University edged Erskine 82-78 in overtime in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action at Belk Arena.
After
Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Northern Kentucky University) hit a 3-point shot to put the Fleet up by five with under a minute left, North Greenville’s Jimmy Ellis buried a clutch three point shot on the ensuing possession to cut the Fleet lead back to two points. After Erskine missed the front end of a one and one, NGU’s Chris Dean tied the score at 70 apiece on a jumper in the lane. Erskine’s
DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School) just missed a game-winner when his contested layup in the lane after picking up a loose ball rolled off the front of the rim.
In the overtime period, Zack Shields hit his second three-pointer of the night from the corner to put the Crusaders up by five at 77-72 with under two minutes to play. Corey Sorrell got the Fleet back within one at 79-79 on his fourth 3-point basket of the evening. Sorrell finished with a season-high 29 points in led all scorers on the night. Forced to foul, NGU’s Jonathan Bozymowski made both free throws and Sorrell’s next three-point shot rimmed out as North Greenville University defeated Erskine 82-78 in overtime.
In addition to Sorrell’s 29 points,
Filip Pejovic (Prijepolje, Serbia, Prijepoljska Gimnazija) scored 14 points while Hall added 11 points.
North Greenville got 26 points from both Paul Harrison and Chris Dean. Harrison also had a game-high 14 rebounds to earn an impressive “double-double.” Jimmy Ellis provided a spark off the bench for the Crusaders by scoring 15 points.
The loss snaps a two-game win streak for the Fleet and drops Erskine to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in conference. North Greenville sees their record improve to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in conference.
Erskine wraps up a four-game home stand on Saturday against the Cobras of Coker College. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
