Gabbard sparks Erskine to a 61-58 win

Box Score Due West, SC – Sophomore guard Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Western Kentucky University) opened the second half by hitting three consecutive three-point shots to spark Erskine to a 61-58 victory over conference foe Limestone College tonight at Belk Arena.  Erskine begins conference play 1-0 and now stands at 3-7 overall.  Meanwhile the Saints even their record at 7-7 overall and start conference play at 0-2.

Gabbard finished with a game-high 22 points.  Junior post player Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Northern Kentucky University)added 13 points along with 7 rebounds while Casey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Simon Kenton High School) scored 10 points.  Sophomore guard DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School) grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds, surpassing his 10 rebound effort against Anderson University last season.

For the Saints, Josh Corry and Ryan Bogdan finished with 14 points each.  Marquis Sloan contributed 10 points as well.

Erskine overcame an eight point deficit in the last five minutes of the first half to take a 26 to 22 lead.  Mike Gabbard ignited the 12-0 run with a steal and an assist to Corey Sorrell for the easy layup then capped off the rally with a 3-point basket to put the Fleet up 26-22.

Following a basket by the Saint’s Charles Blue to start the second half, Gabbard hit three consecutive three-pointers to give Erskine their largest lead of the night at 11 points.  Although Erskine never trailed in the second half, Limestone managed to get with a single point twice in the last minute of play.  With just under a minute left, Ryan Bogdan nailed a three-point shot with an Erskine defender in his face to bring the score to 57-56.  After two made free throws by Hall, Limestone’s Brandon Long hit a jumper with 22 seconds remaining to bring the Saints within one again.  Corey Sorrell scored on Erskine’s next possession and Limestone’s last two desperation three-point shots were off the mark to give Erskine the 61-58 conference win.

Erskine hosts in-state conference member North Greenville University this Thursday.  Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
