The Abbey dominates the Fleet 79-59

Box Score Belmont, NC – Belmont-Abbey opened the game scoring the first ten points and never trailed as the Crusaders defeated the Erskine Flying Fleet 79 to 59 in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action at the Wheeler Center tonight.

Belmont-Abbey shot an impressive 50% from the floor, led by Tyshawn Good’s 25 points and Kyle Phillips’ 24 points.  Matthew Graves had a game-high 7 rebounds while adding 10 points.

Sophomore DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School) came off the bench to lead the Fleet with 12 points.  Fellow sophomore Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Boone County High School) had 11 points.

The Abbey dominated the boards, holding a 39 to 22 advantage, and leading to 16 second chance points for the Crusaders.

Good scored six of the Abbey’s first 10 points to start the game while sophomore Brandon Bjerre (Columbia, MD, Hammond High School) drilled a 3-point shot to break the Fleet’s scoring drought.  Erskine played even with the Crusaders through the remainder of the half and went into the locker room trailing 26 to 34.

The teams began the second half swapping baskets.  After a three-point basket by Erskine’s Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Holy Cross High School), the Abbey rattled off ten unanswered points to take a 50 to 33 lead.  Erskine never recovered as Belmont-Abbey went on to win the game 79 to 59.

After playing the last three games on the road, Erskine returns home this Saturday to host non-conference foe Allen University.  Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
