Barton grounds the Fleet 79-62

Box Score Wilson, NC – The Barton Bulldogs used a 13-1 run in early in the first half to ground the Erskine Flying Fleet 79 to 62 in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action at Wilson Gymnasium tonight.  The Fleet return home at 4-9 overall and 2-4 in conference while Barton College stays in contention for the conference title at 4-1 and 9-5 overall.

After trailing in the opening minutes, Barton’s Shante Neal ignited a 13-1 run to secure the lead permanently for the Bulldogs at 17-7.  At the half, Barton led 40-29 over the visiting Flying Fleet.

Barton maintained their double-digit until midway through the second half when freshman Tishal Turknett (Martinez, GA, Lakeside High School) hit a jumper to cut the lead to eight points at 59-51.  Unfortunately, Barton had another surge in the closing minutes of the game to extend their lead to as many as twenty before winning the game 79-62.

Neal finished with a magical “double-double” with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.  Janetta Robinson and Nyeshea Willie shared game-high honors with 18 points each.  Jolanda Mitchell added 10 points to the victor’s cause.

For Erskine, sophomore Jana Dixon (Conyers, GA, Heritage High School) and senior Porsha Morgan (Columbus, GA, LaGrange Academy) scored 14 points with Dixon pulling down a team-high 8 rebounds and Morgan handing out a season-best 8 assists.  Senior Elizabeth Tatum (Glennville, GA, Pinewood Christian Academy) contributed 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Erskine concludes their three-game road trip next Wednesday at Belmont-Abbey College.  Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
