Filip Pejovic (Prijepolje, Serbia, Palm Beach Atlantic University) scored a season-high 19 points as Erskine lost on the road to Barton College 80 to 70 in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action at Wilson Gymnasium. The loss drops the Fleet to 3-11 overall and 1-4 in conference while Barton climbs to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in conference.
The game remained close until the final minutes of the first half. In the early minutes of the game, Pejovic scored five consecutive points within 30 seconds on a jumper and 3-point basket to give the Fleet in the lead at 11 to 10. After a Barton turnover, senior
Brandon Quarles (Landrum, SC, Landrum High School) scored a minute later to give Erskine their largest lead at 13-10 with less than fourteen minutes to play. At that point, Barton used a 7-0 run to retake the lead for good. Erskine pulled back to within two points at 22 to 20 on a layup by Quarles after a steal by freshman
Isaac Williamson (Walhalla, SC, Walhalla High School). Barton retook the lead on an 11-3 run and led 41-33 at the half.
Erskine’s
Brandon Bjerre (Columbia, MD, Hammond High School) opened the second half with a 3-point basket as Erskine kept the Barton lead to single-digits until midway through the second half. After another Bjerre 3-pointer drew the Fleet within four points at 51 to 47, Barton scored the next four baskets, including a 3-point bomb by Gerald Boston, to push their lead to double-digits at 61 to 47. Barton went on the win the game 80 to 70.
Boston earned a famed “double-double” by scoring a game-high 25 points while dishing out 11 assists. Jaren Haley added 12 points and teammate Keith Manley scored 10 points with a team-high 8 rebounds.
Quarles finished with 14 points and a game-best 9 rebounds and sophomore
Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Boone County High School) contributed 10 points along with 5 assists.
Erskine stays on the road next week as they travel to Belmont-Abbey on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
