Box Score Banner Elk, NC – Erskine got double-doubles from both
Sha'Niqua Whitley (Columbia, SC, Spartanburg Methodist College) and
Jana Dixon (Conyers, GA, Heritage High School) to lead the Erskine Flying Fleet to a 67 to 60 road victory over the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College tonight at Williams Gymnasium in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action. Erskine climbs to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in conference while Lees-McRae College slips to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in conference.
With the score tied at 10 a piece midway through the opening period, Lees-McRae looked to put the visiting Fleet away with an 8-0 run. Icey Patterson nailed back-to-back jump shots to lead the charge. The Fleet immediately responded with their own 10-2 run to tie the score at 20 each. Whitley scored five of the Fleet’s ten points during the run. Erskine closed out the half on a short run to take a 30-26 lead at halftime.
Erskine quickly took a ten point lead to open the second half as Dixon converted three of four free throws and senior
Elizabeth Tatum (Glennville, GA, Pinewood Christian Academy) hit two jump shots. The Bobcats crawled back to take tie the game halfway through the second half. At that point, Erskine sprinted out to a double-digit lead over the next five minutes and never trailed again. Erskine won 67 to 60.
Tatum led all scorers with 20 points. Whitley earned her first career double-double as a member of the Flying Fleet scoring 14 points while pulling down 10 rebounds. Meanwhile Dixon earned her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. It is the sixth time this year Dixon has had over 10 rebounds in a game. Senior guard
Porsha Morgan (Columbus, GA, LaGrange Academy) contributed 16 points and 5 assists.
The Bobcats’ bench led them in scoring tonight. Deanna Waters had the game’s third double-double with a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds while Megan Tate had 10 points and 4 assists.
Erskine stays on the road travelling to Wilson, North Carolina, on Saturday to play conference foe Barton College. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
