Charleston, WV – After dropping the first two games in the University of Charleston Invitational Tournament, the Erskine Volleyball bounced back to win their final two games on Saturday to go 2-2 on the weekend.
The Fleet lost a tough five set match to host University of Charleston Friday afternoon. The Flying Fleet won the first two games (25-20 & 25-23) only to see the Univ. of Charleston come back to win the last three sets, including a 28-30 set, to win the game. Senior Sandra Campbell (Pilot Point, TX, Point Pilot HS) led the Fleet with 20 kills while junior setter Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) had her first of three “double-doubles” with 46 assists and 10 digs. Libero Brooke Dodge (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School)recorded a game-high 29 digs in the game.
In the Friday nightcap, the Fleet lost to Concord University in four sets (25-27, 25-20, 19-25, 20-25). Campbell once again led the Fleet with 21 kills and 2 blocks while Chabra recorded her second “double-double” with 41 assists and 10 digs. Defensively, Dodge and Liz Massey (Greenville, SC, Eastside High School) combined for 20 and 19 digs respectively.
The Fleet rebounded on Saturday to take two games. In the first set, Erskine pounded Glenville State in straight sets (25-10, 25-15, 25-20). Campbell paced the Fleet with 11 kills while Massey contributed 8 kills and 11 digs.
In the final game against Chowan College, Erskine won a tough five set game (27-29, 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 17-15) to finish the tournament 2-2. Chabra earned her 3rd “double-double” of the tournament with a season-high 53 assists and 12 digs. She also had 7 kills, just missing the rare “triple-double.” Campbell led the Fleet with 23 kills while Massey just missed her own “double-double” with 9 kills and a season-high 29 digs. Dodge also had a season-high 30 digs.
Erskine is now 5-4 on the season.
The Fleet travel to Anderson, South Carolina, on Wednesday to play archrival Anderson University at 7 p.m.
