Due West, SC – Belmont-Abbey College used their deep bench to defeat Erskine 19-9 in Conference Carolinas women’s lacrosse action at Huggins Field. With the win, Belmont-Abbey improves to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in conference while Erskine falls to 1-10 overall and 1-4 in conference.
After falling behind 4-0 in the first eight minutes of play, Erskine came back to tie the game at 5-5 with 11:13 left. Erskine’s Alesia Jerrells (Columbia, SC, Blythewood) scored the Fleet’s first goal on a nice move from behind the goal. Less than two minutes later, Savannah Nunn (Sacremento, CA, Rocklin High School) set up Kelly Dalziel (Ocean, NJ, Ocean Township High School) for another Erskine goal followed by Jerrells’ second goal of the game to cut the Crusaders lead to two goals. With 12:00 minutes to go in the half, Nunn was fouled in front of the Crusader goal and preceded to convert the free position attempt to bring the Fleet within one. After winning the ensuing draw control, Jerrells found Sarah Tibbits (Marietta, GA, Sprayberry) in front of the goal to tie the game at 5 apiece. The Crusaders, leading 7 to 5, scored three quick goals right before the half to take a 10-5 lead.
Belmont-Abbey scored two goals in the first six minutes of the second half to lengthen their lead to 12-5. Erskine quickly countered, scoring two goals just 44 seconds apart to draw back to within five with 22:40 remaining. Both teams slowed the game over the next ten minutes with only three goals being scored. After two Belmont-Abbey goals, Erskine’s Denisa Zani (Greenville, SC, Eastside) was fouled and scored on the subsequent free position attempt to make the score 14-8. At that point, Belmont-Abbey rattled off five successive goals in the next five minutes of play to take command of the game. Nunn scored the final goal of the game with 1:39 left as Belmont-Abbey won 19-9.
Belmont-Abbey had eight players score a goal on the day, led by Kristyn Kinsey’s game-high 6 goals and 2 assists. Laura Dowd also had 4 goals for the Abbey.
Both Savannah Nunn and Alesia Jerrells finished with 3 goals and 1 assist each for the Fleet. Kaitlyn Overley (Columbia, SC, Blythewood) had 13 saves for the game, including 11 in the first save.
Erskine hosts Liberty University this Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
