Banner Elk, NC – After falling behind 6-0 in the first six minutes of play, Erskine rallied to close within one goal against the Bobcats of Lees-McRae in the second half before losing 22-14 in Conference Carolinas women’s lacrosse action in Banner Elk, North Carolina. The loss drops the Fleet to 1-14 on the season and 1-5 in conference. Lees-McRae improves to 3-9 overall and 1-6 in conference.
Lees-McRae opened the game with two goals in the first minute of play and scored four more goals in the next five minutes to take an early 6-0 on the Fleet. From that point, the Fleet outscored the Bobcats 7-4 to trim the LMC lead to just three at halftime.
Junior Alesia Jerrells (Columbia, SC, Blythewood) scored the Fleet’s first goal in the twenty-third minute and assisted on the Fleet’s next goal setting up freshman Savannah Nunn (Sacremento, CA, Rocklin High School) a few minutes later. The Fleet were held scoreless for the next nine minutes of play until Jerrells broke the scoreless drought with her second goal of the game. The Fleet rattled off three more goals in the next minute to cut the lead to three at 10-7 with 7:17 left in the opening period. Neither team scored in the last seven minutes of the half.
Lees-McRae won the opening draw control of the second half, quickly passed it forward and scored the second half’s first goal in just ten seconds. The Fleet responded well, tightening their defensive play and scoring two goals. Erskine’s Anna Dailey (Clinton, SC, Clinton) and Nunn both scored on free position attempts after being fouled. After swapping a goal each, Nunn scored her third goal of the game to bring the Fleet within one at 12-11 with 20:41 remaining to play. But the Fleet could draw no closer as the Bobcats outscored the Fleet 10-3 to win the game 22-14.
For the Fleet, Nunn had five goals and one assist and Jerrells finished with four goals and one assist. Kaitlyn Overley (Columbia, SC, Blythewood) again finished with double-digit saves with 12 on 37 shots.
The Bobcats were led by Ellie Psillas’ game-high 6 goals and one assist. Emily Guenther had 5 goals and 3 assists.
Erskine concludes their season tomorrow at home against Pfeiffer University. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
