Barton tops Erskine 92 to 77

Wilson, NC – The Erskine women’s basketball team lost to Barton College 92 to 77 in Conference Carolina’s women’s basketball action at Wilson Gymnasium.  The loss dropped the Fleet to 7-10 overall and 5-6 in conference.  The Fleet had won five of their previous six games entering tonight’s contest.  Barton College remains undefeated in conference play at 13-0 and is now 17-2 overall.

Barton, which never trailed in the game, used an early 9-2 run to take a 13-6 lead in the first five minutes of the game.   Barton extended their lead to 17 points at one point in the half before taking an eleven point lead into halftime at 42 to 31.

Twice in the early minutes of the second half Erskine trimmed the Barton lead to just four points.   Unfortunately, with 14:28 minutes remaining, Barton blew the game open with a 15-5 run over the next three minutes of play to take a 67-52 lead.  Barton maintained their advantage the rest of the way, winning the game 92-77.

Barton, ranked fifth nationally in scoring, shot an impressive 50% (36 of 72) from the field.  The Fleet kept themselves in the game by shooting 45.3% from the field, including 7 of 15 from three-point range.

Barton dominated the boards, out rebounding the Fleet 45 to 27.  Barton scored 27 second chance points.

Senior Jean Marie Harris (Lancaster, SC, Indian Land High School) led the Fleet with 24 points while junior Elizabeth Tatum (Glennville, GA, Pinewood Christian Academy) added 21 points and a team-high 6 rebounds.

Jamila Johnson led the Bulldogs with a game-high 25 points and 5 steals.  Teammate Janae Jackson earned a “double-double” with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Fleet host Belmont-Abbey College on Monday with tip-off set at 5:30 p.m.
