Box Score Due West, SC- Erskine could not overcome a poor shooting first half, losing to Anderson University 63 to 48 in non-conference men’s basketball action at Belk Arena. With the loss, Erskine falls to 1-6 on the year while Anderson University moves to 6-3 overall.
Erskine was led by junior
Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Northern Kentucky University) who scored 19 points and grabbed four rebounds. His brother,
Casey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Simon Kenton High School), finished with 9 points.
Anderson’s Denzail Jones led all scorers with 26 points and Nick Trull had 12 points and 6 boards.
Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm early. After eight minutes of play, Anderson clung to a two point lead at 12 to 10. But in just over a minute of play, Anderson drained three consecutive 3-point baskets, two by Jones, to take a 21-10 lead and built their lead to as many as 28 points with six minutes left in the half. Leading the Trojan run was Jones, who scored 19 of his 26 points in the first half. The Trojans took a comfortable 39 to 14 lead into the half.
For the half, Anderson shot an impressive 52% from the floor, including 5 of 12 from long range. Meanwhile, Erskine, who was playing their third game in five days, could only manage to hit 5 of 20 (20%) and was just 2 of 11 from behind the arc.
Erskine came out strong in the second half, immediately cutting the Trojan lead to just 14 points in the first five minutes of the half, highlighted by consecutive three-point baskets by Casey Sorrell. Later in the half, Erskine twice cut the lead to 13 points but could not sustain the momentum to draw any closer. Erskine shot a much improved 42% in the second half but could not overcome the first half deficit.
At halftime, Erskine recognized the women’s soccer team for winning the Conference Carolinas Team Sportsmanship Award and senior volleyball player
Sandra Campbell (Pilot Point, TX, USC-Upstate) on her being named Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year.
Erskine returns to action on December 28
th against Charleston Southern University and hosts Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday, December 31
st at 3 p.m.
