Box Score Due West, SC – Erskine’s Corey Sorrell scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Flying Fleet past the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University 73-61 in non-conference men’s basketball action at Belk Arena. With the victory, Erskine improves to 2-7 overall while SWU slips to 6-6 on the year.
Erskine shot 50% from the floor and tallied an impressive 16 assists. Sophomore guard
Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Western Kentucky University), tied a season-high 7 assists while scoring 18 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. Fellow sophomore guard
DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School) added 10 more points for the Fleet.
For the Warriors, Kenny Joyner recorded an impressive “double-double” with 20 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Isaiah Reeves and David Brown came off the bench to score 10 points each.
The lead exchanged hands several times in the early part of the game but with six minutes left in the opening frame, Erskine made 5 of 6 free throws, four by
Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Northern Kentucky University), to push the lead to double-digits at 31-20. Erskine took a 34-23 lead into the locker room at the break.
In the second half, Erskine continued to build their lead and lead by as many as 22 points at one point. However, after a Gabbard jumper with 8:28 left, Erskine failed to score over the next four minutes as Southern Wesleyan cut the Fleet lead in half to 62-51. SWU’s David Brown hit a deep three point shot with 2:09 remaining to cut the margin to 8 points but that was as close as the Warriors got as Erskine won 73-61.
Erskine opens conference play this Tuesday night as the Saints of Limestone College visit Belk Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
