Box Score Charleston, SC – The Buccaneers of Charleston Southern University needed an offensive burst midway through the second half to avoid an upset bid by the Flying Fleet of Erskine to win 96-69 at the Buc Dome in non-conference men’s basketball action. The Buccaneers climb to 8-4 overall and remain undefeated at home this season at 6-0. Meanwhile, the Fleet drop to 1-7 on the season.
Sophomore
Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Western Kentucky University) scored a season-high 21 points to lead the Fleet. Junior
Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Northern Kentucky University) added 18 points while his brother
Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Holy Cross High School) contributed 12 points.
For the Buccaneers, five players reached double-digits led by Kelvin Martin’s “double-double” of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Arlon Harper scored a game-high 22 points.
Despite the final score, Erskine actually held a three point lead five minutes into the second half after two made free throws by Gabbard at 52-49. Erskine stayed within single digits until the ten minute mark when the Bucs rattled off 11 unanswered points to take a commanding 77-57 lead in route to the 96-69 victory.
At the half, Erskine trailed by just one point at 42-41.
CSU dominated the boards holding a 38-20 advantage over the Fleet.
Erskine kicks off a four-game home stand this Saturday. The Fleet host Southern Wesleyan University on New Year’s Eve at Belk Arena. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
