Morgan scores 22 points; Fleet lose to Catawba 70-56

Box Score Wingate, NC – Despite a game-high 22 points from senior guard Porsha Morgan (Columbus, GA, LaGrange Academy), Erskine fell to Catawba College 70-56 in the OrthoCarolina Classic at Wingate University’s Cuddy Arena in non-conference women’s basketball action.  With the win, Catawba runs their win-streak to four games and improves to 6-4 on the season while Erskine slips to 2-5 overall.

Catawba had four starting players score in double-figures.   Dana Hicks earned a “double-double” for the Indians with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Lauren Lewis scored a team-high 14 points and teammates Chloe Bully and Elizabeth Merritt added 12 and 10 points respectively.

In addition to Morgan, senior Elizabeth Tatum (Glennville, GA, Pinewood Christian Academy) added 13 points and sophomore Jana Dixon (Conyers, GA, Heritage High School) contributed 10 points along with a team-high 7 rebounds.

After a first half that saw 11 lead changes and 5 ties, Catawba rallied in the second half to erase a seven point halftime deficit to win 70-56.  Following a jump shot by Tatum to put the Fleet up 48-37, Catawba scored 17 unanswered points to take a 54-48 lead.  Lauren Lewis scored 8 of her 14 points in the run, including back-to-back 3-point baskets.  Catawba pushed their lead to as many as 16 points before settling with the 70-56 win.

After shooting 48% from the floor in the first half, Erskine could manage to hit just 9 of 25 (36%) in the second half and missed all seven 3-point shots in the half.  On the flip side, Catawba shot an impressive 52% from the floor for the game, including 7 of 14 from long range.  Catawba also held a commanding advantage on the glass at 38 to 22.

Erskine is off until New Year’s Eve when they travel to Augusta State University.  Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
