Erskine shocks #6 Anderson 2-0

Due West, SC – Erskine’s Dylan Goodale (Vienna, VA, George C. Marshall High School) scored two goals as the Flying Fleet shocked #6 Anderson University 2-0 in non-conference men’s soccer action at Huggins Field.  Erskine improves to 9-6-1 on the season while Anderson slips to 13-3.

In typical rivalry game fashion, the first half ended in a scoreless tie with both teams taking an equal number of shots at five each. In the 29th minute, Erskine’s Jack Kimber (Manchester, England, Priestnall High School) received a loose ball at the top of the box and rifled a shot but right at the Anderson goalkeeper Lukas Hesse.  Right before the half, Anderson got two opportunities but failed to convert.  Tapiwa Munetsi passed the ball across the front of the Erskine goal that a sliding Daniel Bowers just missed.  Munetsi got another look in minute later and hit the shot wide.

Erskine broke the scoreless tie early in the second half (48:50).  Goodale received a long pass, made a nice move to go around his defender and flipped the ball to the far post before the Anderson goalkeeper could close to give Erskine the 1-0 lead.

With time winding down, Anderson pressured forward which allowed Erskine to add their insurance goal late in the game (84:34).  Erskine’s Andrew Settlemire (Beaufort, SC, Beaufort High School) received the ball at the top right corner of the box, crossed it the other side to the streaking Goodale, who shot the ball into the upper right corner just over the goalkeeper’s reach.

For the game, Anderson outshot Erskine 17-12, including a 12-7 advantage in the second half.

Erskine’s goalkeeper Roberto De La Vina (Oviedo, Spain, San Ignacio) recorded his second shutout of the season, recording 9 saves on 17 shots.

The Flying Fleet have won their last three games and four of their last five games.

Erskine has one regular season game remaining.  Erskine travels to Belmont, North Carolina, this Saturday to play to Belmont-Abbey College.  With a victory, Erskine will host in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament next Tuesday.
