Turnovers haunt Erskine in 76 to 61 loss to Queens University

Charlotte, NC – Erskine showed some rust in their first game back from Christmas break.  The Flying Fleet turned the ball over 25 times leading to 24 points for the Royals of Queens University in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action at Ovens Athletic Center.  With the loss, Erskine falls to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in conference while Queen University remains undefeated in conference play at 3-0 and 4-5 overall.

Erskine started well taking an early 8 point lead at 14-6 on a 3-point bucket by senior guard Jean Marie Harris (Lancaster, SC, Indian Land High School).  Queens University slowly whittled away at the Fleet lead before Melissa Thomas put back a Marissa Hudley miss to give the Royals the lead at 23-21.  Queens University never trailed again in the game and led by six points at halftime, 40-34.

Erskine stayed with six points until midway through the second half.  At that point, Queens University went on a 16-5 run over the next four minutes to lengthen their lead to 17 points at 68-51.  Queens closed out the game winning 76 to 61.

Erskine’s Porsha Morgan (Columbus, GA, LaGrange Academy)led all scorers with a season-high 25 points while freshman Jana Dixon (Conyers, GA, Heritage High School)pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.  Queens’ Marissa Hudley earned a “double-double” with a team-high 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  Hudley also had 5 steals on the night.

Erskine travels to Belmont-Abbey College on Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m. before returning home on Saturday to play Barton.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
