Due West, SC – Down by 10 points with 5 minutes left, Erskine rallied to beat the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College 75 to 74 in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action at Belk Arena. Erskine improves to 5-8 overall and 3-4 in conference while Lees-McRae falls to 2-9 overall and 2-4 in conference.
Down 71-61 the Fleet scored 14 unanswered points to take a 75-71 lead with 29 seconds remaining. Leading the rally was junior forward Elizabeth Tatum (Glennville, GA, Pinewood Christian Academy), who scored 7 of the Fleet’s 14 points. Tatum finished with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to earn the famed “double-double.”
Erin Thompson snapped the Bobcat scoreless streak when she nailed a 3-point basket from the corner with six seconds remaining. Erskine ran out the clock to win the game 75-74.
Surprisingly Lees-McRae outshot the Fleet 44.1% to 36.1%. The Fleet did hold a significant advantage from the free throw line converting 14 of 22 (63.6%) compared to 7-16 (43.8%) for Lees-McRae. The Fleet also won the battle of boards 50-43.
Leading the Fleet offensively was junior point Porsha Morgan (Columbus, GA, LaGrange Academy) with a game-high 20 points. Senior Jean Marie Harris (Lancaster, SC, Indian Land High School) contributed 12 points.
Chloe Parker (Chicago, IL/Iowa Western CC) earned a “double-double” for the Bobcats with a team-high 17 points and 13 rebounds. Janina Thurau (Berlin, Germany/Ernst-Abbe H.S.) had 15 points while Icey Patterson (Seneca, SC/Seneca H.S.) and Erin Thompson (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run H.S.) finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Fleet travel to Mt. Olive College this Saturday. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
