Shepherdstown, WV- Alesia Jerrells led the offensive charge Wednesday as the Flying Fleet attempted to take down Shepherd University in women’s lacrosse action. But the Fleet fell short as they were bombarded with 45 shots resulting in a 17-10 loss. After this loss, the Fleet slip to 0-12 overall while Shepherd improves to 2-5.
The match started slowly Wednesday afternoon, with Shepherd’s Nikki Fusco striking for her first goal of the match after 8:14 of play. Fusco went on to score two more back-to-back goals within the next seven minutes putting Shepherd up 3-0. Rusco would go on to score a total of four goals during the game.
But Erskine’s Jerrells put a stop to the bleeding as she struck for her first goal during the 18th minute of play. Shepherd responded with another goal, and the remainder of the half saw each team exchange points. Shepherd closed the first half with back-to-back goals to take a 7-4 advantage into the break.
Shepherd opened the second period with another set of goals to extend the lead to 9-4 before Erskine’s Lisa Kmonicek scored her first of two second half goals. Kmonicek’s goal started a 4-1 run by the Fleet which brought them to within two. But this was as close as Erskine would get. Shepherd continued to put the pressure on, and cruised to the 17-10 victory.
Erskine’s Jerrells led the Fleet in scoring on Wednesday with 4 goals. Jerrells also had 3 assists. Kmonicek played an excellent match as well as she recorded 3 goals while Anna Dailey, Hillary Henry, and Von McKenzie each added a goal apiece for the Fleet.
Shepherd’s Nicole Ruane led all scorers with 8 goals.
Erskine was out-shot Wednesday 45-19, but did a great job on capitalizing on their limited opportunities.
The Fleet have two more games on their spring break tour. They take on Seton Hill Thursday afternoon and then Saint Andrews Saturday before returning to Due West.
