Erskine ends season with a win, defeats Coker 3-0

Due West, SC – The Erskine volleyball team concluded their regular season by defeating Coker College in straight sets (25-16, 25-19, and 25-22) in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action at Belk Arena.  The Fleet finish the season on a 3-game win streak at 18-10 overall and 14-4 in conference while Coker ends their season at 2-26 overall and 2-16 in conference.

Throughout the game, Coker struggled to return Erskine’s serve.  The Fleet had twelve aces in the game and effectively kept Coker from transitioning into their offense.  In the first set with Fleet clinging to a 9-8 lead, sophomoreLiz Massey (Greenville, SC, Eastside High School) served seven consecutive times, scoring two aces, and leading the Fleet on a 7-0 run.  The Fleet went on to win the set 25-16.

In the second set with the score tied at 6 each, Massey led the Fleet on a 6-0 run with two aces and a block by freshman Mary Crawford James (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Bishop England High School).  The teams traded points until the Fleet closed out the set on a 4-0 run capped by a kill by Sandra Campbell (Pilot Point, TX, Point Pilot HS)to win the set 25-19.

Senior Alison Albers (Goodhue, MN, Iowa Lakes CC) gave the Fleet an early 7-3 lead on 3 blocks.  Aided by several Fleet errors, Coker used two rallies to take a 16-12 lead.  After trading points, Coker lost the lead by committing three consecutive errors tying the set at 19 each.  The score remained tied until the Fleet got consecutive kills from Campbell and James to win the set 25 to 22.

Campbell paced the Fleet with a game-high 10 kills while Massey had 8 kills, 4 aces, and 6 digs.  Sophomore Brooke Dodge (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School) also had 4 aces along with a game-high 15 digs from her libero position.  Setter Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School)had 31 assists.

Coker’s Molly Bookhart earned a “double-double” on the night with 14 assists and 11 digs.  Katie McElveen and Cynallhia Indriago had 5 kills each to lead the Cobras.

Prior to the game, Erskine recognized senior Alison Albers for her contributions to the volleyball program the last two years.

The Fleet advance to the Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament as the #2 seed.  The Fleet will host Limestone College, the #7 seed, on Tuesday, November 9th at 6:30 p.m. in the first round of the tournament.  The Fleet swept the series with Limestone this year winning 3-2 and 3-0.
