Lander Tops Erskine 68-54

Greenwood, SC – Sophomore Chris Gore (Myrtle Beach, SC, Myrtle Beach High School) earned his first career “double-double” as Erskine lost to local rival Lander University 68 to 54 in non-conference men’s basketball action in Horne Arena.  Gore scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds.  The Fleet start the season 0-3 while Lander remains undefeated at 3-0.

The Fleet took an early 5-0 lead on a field goal and a 3-point basket by freshman DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School), but Lander rallied to tie the score at 7-7 at the 13:28 mark on a Quentin Bastian bucket.

 

Erskine’s John Michael Smith (Pickens, SC, Pickens High School) scored back-to-back three pointers to give the Fleet a 16-13 advantage at 10:26, but Lander retook the lead at 9:25 when Calvin Liptrot's two free throws made it 17-16.  The Bearcats finished the half on a 12-9 run to take a 32-25 lead into the locker room.

 

Lander slowly built their lead to double-digits in the second half earning their first double-digit lead at 38-28 with 16:23 remaining in the game.

 

Junior transferFilip Pejovic (Prijepolje, Serbia, Palm Beach Atlantic University) finished with 12 points for the Fleet while Hall continued his strong play with 10 points.

 

Lander was led by David Pruett and Calvin Liptrot with 18 and 17 points respectively.  Jermel Kennedy also earned a “double-double” with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

 

The Fleet host Pfeiffer University this Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
