Misenheimer, NC- Erskine women’s basketball struggled shooting from the field Saturday evening resulting in a 72-82 loss to conference foe Pfeiffer University. With the loss, the Lady Fleet slip to 6-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play while the Falcons improve to 8-7 and 8-2.
The first half was hotly contested with four ties and two lead changes, but the home team Falcons connected on 45% of their field goal attempts to Erskine’s 36% allowing them to take a 34-30 lead into the halftime break.
The Falcons exploded from the locker room, going on a quick 25-9 run to build their biggest lead of the game (59-39). Erskine tried to respond, but could not put points on the board shooting a mere 35% from the field including 3/16 from behind the three-point arc in the second half. Once the Falcons cooled down, the Erskine put together a significant drive, but it was not enough to overcome the twenty point margin. Erskine’s bench, led by captain Christine Phan, directed the come-back attempt, outscoring the Falcon bench 25-16. The valiant effort fell short and Pfeiffer was able to protect their home court with the ten point victory.
Erskine point guard Porsha Morgan led all Fleet scorers with 18 points. Morgan also pulled down a team high 7 rebounds and dished out 5 assists. Senior Mary Ann Langford hit for 17 points and gathered 5 rebounds of her own. Phan came off the bench Saturday to contribute 10 points and distributed 4 assists.
Pfeiffer’s Domonique China led all scorers with 20 points. China also picked up 10 rebounds, leading the Falcons to a 48-39 rebounding advantage over the Lady Fleet. Three other starters finished in double figures for Pfeiffer. Jamila Harris added 17 points and 7 rebounds while Shelley Reese and Kellie Rhoney each contributed 13 points of their own.
Erskine will hit the road again Monday afternoon as they head to Charlotte, NC to take on Queens University. Tip off is set for 5:30 PM.
