Anderson, SC – Erskine could not pull the upset tonight over archrival Anderson University, losing 66 to 52. Defensively, Erskine controlled the game tempo and forced Anderson to shoot from the outside. This strategy allowed the Fleet to hold Anderson University to twenty points below their season average. Unfortunately, Anderson shot well enough, especially from three point range (10 of 27), to win the game.
In the first half, the Fleet defense kept the game close forcing Anderson to shoot outside and scoring on Trojan turnovers. Only six of Anderson’s 21 shots in the first half came from within the three point line while the Fleet scored eight points on Trojan mistakes. The Fleet only trailed by two points at the half, 24 to 22.
The start of the 2nd half resembled the first with Erskine able to tie the score at 28 to 28. Shortly after that, Anderson pulled away on a 10 to 2 run as Nick Trull scored 7 of his team-high 16 points, giving the Trojans a 46 to 35 advantage. The Fleet’s Brandon Wright would cut the lead down to five points after making consecutive baskets but Anderson pushed their lead back to double-digits and won the game by fourteen.
The Flying Fleet were once again led by Brandon Wright with a game-high 18 points and 3 steals. Fellow guard Dejan Nedelkovski also contributed 16 points while freshman forward Chris Gore chipped in 10 points and grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds.
Erskine did well on broads, 29 to 32 Anderson, despite not having their leading rebounder available. Marko Latinovic suffered a possible season-ending knee-injury in Monday night’s dramatic triple overtime loss to Brevard College.
In addition to Nick Trull’s 16 points, the Trojans got 13 points from both Kevis Cornwell and Brandon Young. Trey Britton led the Trojans with 7 rebounds.
The Fleet stay on the road this weekend as they travel to Misenheimer, North Carolina, to face the Falcons of Pfeiffer University. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
