Due West, SC – It was a historic night in Due West as the Erskine Volleyball team took the floor for the first time in twelve years. The young Flying Fleet team gave a great effort but could not overcome the more experienced Lander University team, falling 3 games to 1.
The Fleet got off to a slow start in the first game, falling behind 11-1 at one point. Coach Heather Vahjen took a time out and regrouped the Fleet team. The Fleet emerged from their huddle a different team. From that point they played the Bearcats point for point but could not overcome the early deficit falling 25 to 13.
In the second game, the Fleet continued to play well against the Bearcats. Both teams had difficulty gaining any real momentum throughout the set. But the Fleet team, cheered on by a great student body section, were able to pull away to seal the victory 25-22. Unfortunately, the Bearcats figured out the Fleet, winning the final two games 25 to 16 and 25 to 6.
Leading the Fleet offensively was Alison Albers (Goodhue, MN/Iowa Lakes CC) with 8 kills and 7 blocks. On the defensive side, Liz Massey contributed with 16 digs on the evening. For Lander, Melissa McCracken had 21 kills, along with a block and 6 digs.
Between games 2 and 3, Erskine recognized several former volleyball players who were on-hand to see the rebirth of their team.
Erskine falls to 2-3 on the year and travels to Francis Marion University to play in a tournament this weekend. The Bearcats stand at 1-0 and travel to Coker College to play in their tournament this weekend.
