Erskine Softball | Fleet earn split at Shorter in conference opener

ROME, Ga. – The Erskine College softball team (3-11, 1-1 CC) split a doubleheader against Shorter University (7-16, 1-1 CC) at Alto Park on Tuesday.

After dropping a low-scoring 2-1 affair in the opener, Layla Clayton's complete game performance in the circle and a pair of RBIs from Kara West helped the Fleet to earn a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Shorter 2-1 Erskine

Starting conference play away from home, the Fleet got it going in the very first inning, as Erskine executed a double steal, which allowed Savannah Koester to score the game's first run. However, the Fleet struggled to find timely hits throughout the rest of the game, and the hosts crossed the plate in the fourth and sixth innings, handing the Fleet a one-run loss in a pitchers' duel.

Game 2: Erskine 6-3 Shorter
In the second game, the Fleet found first-inning success again, this time via an RBI single from Riley Rabon to open the scoring. That 1-0 scoreline remained until the third when Erskine got some insurance, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Gabby Burroughs and run-scoring hits by Kennedy Crouch and Kara West to make it 4-0. The hosts got on the board in the bottom half, but another West RBI single in the top of the fifth pushed the lead back to four. The Hawks scored on an error in the bottom half, but a Shorter error of its own in the next half-inning allowed Amber Clark to make it a four-run game again, and the Fleet held off a late push from Shorter in its final at-bat to take the back half of the doubleheader.

THE PLAYER
Kara West tallied a hit in each game of the doubleheader, including a 2-for-4 performance with a pair of RBIs to lead the Fleet offensively to a Game 2 win.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine hosts Anderson University (9-3) on Thursday, starting at 1 p.m.
