Erskine Softball | West's walk-off helps Fleet split with Augusta

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College softball team (2-10) split a doubleheader against Augusta University (7-7) at the Erskine Softball Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshmen duo Zalee Brown (complete-game win, two earned runs allowed) and Kara West (walk-off single in 7th) helped the Fleet to a thrilling 3-2 win in the opener, before Augusta responded with a 10-2 win in the back half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Erskine 3-2 Augusta
Both starting pitchers posted zeroes in the first two innings, and even after Augusta took the lead in the third, Zalee Brown kept it a one-run game until the Erskine offense broke through in the fifth. After Hannah Lewis reached on an error, Gabby Burroughs made it hurt with a go-ahead two-run home run to give the Fleet their first lead of the afternoon. The Lions tied the game in the sixth, but Erskine used its magic in its final at-bat again. Kennedy Crouch got it started in the bottom of the seventh by drawing a walk and then Summer Nelsen laced a single into left field. Ava Rogers used her speed to reach on an error that loaded the bases for Kara West. And the freshman delivered with a slow chopper down the first base line, beating out the throw to first, which allowed Mattie Hinson to score the game's winning run.

Game 2: Augusta 10-2 Erskine (Final / 6 innings)
The second game of the doubleheader saw the visitors use a couple big innings to jump out to a 9-1 lead after four and a half innings. Kami Bolick launched her first Erskine home run in the bottom of the fifth, but another Augusta run in the sixth led to the game finishing via run rule after six innings.

THE PLAYER
Gabby Burroughs recorded hits in both games, going a combined 3-for-7 at the plate, including a go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth inning of Game 1.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine hosts Anderson University (9-3) on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
