HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Shorter 3-0 Erskine
In a pair of contests that were originally scheduled for mid-March but were postponed due to rain, pitching stole the show in Game 1. The game remained scoreless through the first three innings before either side flinched, as the hosts struck first with some aggressive baserunning. Shorter added two more runs in the fifth, and the Fleet offense was held in check throughout the opener.
Game 2: Shorter 7-5 Erskine
The back half of the doubleheader saw more offensive fireworks, as the Fleet wasted no time getting on the board, thanks to a sacrifice fly from
Maddie Ingram in the top of the first to give Erskine a 1-0 lead. However, the Hawks responded with a four-run bottom of the first. Trailing 4-1, Savannah Koester's RBI single in the second and a solo home run from Ingram in the third helped the Fleet attempt to come back, but Shorter continued to respond. With the Fleet down 7-3 going into the final frame, Erskine had one last-gasp rally. Three free passes loaded the bases for the Fleet in the seventh and a Shorter error allowed Ingram and
DC Still to score to cut the deficit in half and bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but Erskine was unable to get any closer.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine travels to Young Harris College (20-22, 11-11 CC) for its conference finale on Wednesday, with the doubleheader slated for a 2 p.m.
