Erskine Baseball | Fleet rally past Chowan in series opener

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College baseball team (17-23, 6-16 CC) defeated Chowan University (5-25, 3-19 CC) by a score of 8-5 at Grier Field on Friday afternoon.

In the opener of a three-game weekend series that included an hour-and-a-half long weather delay, Dylan Wanat's multi-home run game led the Fleet's late rally to overcome an early 4-0 deficit and snap an eight-game losing skid.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Back at home for the weekend, Erskine was a little slow out of the gates, as it was the visiting Hawks who struck first with a four-run second inning, all with two outs. Erskine, though, climbed back into the contest slowly, starting in the third inning with an RBI double from Jorge Pascual. In the fourth, Pascual drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-2 before a lightning delay paused the game for nearly 90 minutes. Once play resumed, the Fleet continued right back on the comeback trail, as JT Yaccarino delivered a pinch-hit RBI single in the fifth to get Erskine within a run. Chowan regained its two-run lead in the top of the sixth, but Dylan Wanat answered back for Erskine with a game-tying two-run home run in the bottom half. A few batters later in the sixth, Jude Littrell scored on a wild pitch to give Erskine its first lead of the game, 6-5. In the eighth, Wanat provided fireworks again, another two-run blast to give the Fleet some insurance and the relief effort of Jared Guell over the final four innings on the mound sealed an 8-5 win in the opener for the Fleet.

THE PLAYER
Redshirt senior outfielder Dylan Wanat stole the show in the latter frames of the game, launching two-run home runs in each of his final two at-bats of the day. His first big fly tied the game at 5 in the sixth inning, and the second gave the Fleet some cushion in the eighth, bringing Wanat's season total to a team-leading 11 home runs.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine and Chowan finish the series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m.
