HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Young Harris 8-4 Erskine (Final / 7 innings)
In the first conference doubleheader of the season, the Erskine offense wasted no time jumping out to an early lead, as
Dale Francis, Jr. cashed in a Mountain Lions' error, scoring Josean Sanchez via an RBI single to give the Fleet a 1-0 lead after a half-inning. However, YHC responded with four runs in their first at-bat. Starter
Alex Heintz settled in the next few frames as the Fleet began their march down the comeback trail. In the third inning,
Jorge Pascual launched a two-run home run with two outs to get the Fleet within a run, and an inning later,
David Hernandez singled home
Jude Littrell after Littrell's leadoff double and the Fleet were back level, 4-4. But, the Mountain Lions had the answer again with another four-spot to regain the lead and the Fleet ran out of outs in a shortened first game of the doubleheader.
Game 2: Young Harris 5-3 Erskine
The series finale quickly turned into a pitchers' duel, and Erskine starter
Jared Guell was ready for the battle, blanking Young Harris through the first four innings. Finally, in the fifth inning, the Fleet offense broke through and in a big way.
Dale Francis, Jr. led off the frame drawing a walk and eventually came around to score the game's first run on a wild pitch.
Jude Littrell scored a few batters later on another Young Harris wild pitch, and then a Mountain Lions error allowed Josean Sanchez to cross the plate as the Fleet manufactured a 3-0 lead at the halfway point. However, similar to the first game of the day, the nationally-ranked Mountain Lions had an answer once again, posting another four-run frame in the bottom half of the fifth to snatch the lead and the Fleet were unable to mount a rally in the final innings.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine goes on the road this coming mid-week for a battle against Limestone University (9-6, 4-2 SAC) on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Fleet throttled the Saints, 15-3, in their meeting at Gaffney a season ago.
