HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Georgia College 4-3 Erskine (Final / 10 innings)
In the Fleet's first true road trip of the 2024 campaign, Erskine and Georgia College played in an instant classic. A third-inning run gave the hosts a narrow 1-0 lead for most of the game, but the Fleet saved some offense for their final few at-bats. In the top of the seventh, with Erskine down to its final two outs, starting pitcher
Kaley Ingle took matters into her own hands, with a clutch, game-tying home run to give the Fleet new life. Moments later,
Hailey Patterson doubled down the left field line before
Kenzie Eagleman followed with a two-bagger of her own to score Patterson and give the Fleet a 2-1 lead. The Bobcats were able to manufacture a run in the bottom half to force extra innings. Despite placing a courtesy runner at second base to start each extra frame, Ingle matched the Georgia College starter with zeroes in the eighth and ninth innings. In the tenth,
Amber Clark led off by advancing Eagleman, the courtesy runner, to third and then
Gabby Burroughs brought home the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to give the Fleet the lead again. However, the hosts struck back with a pair of runs in the bottom half to escape with the win.
Game 2: Georgia College 10-2 Erskine (Final / 5 innings)
Following a heartbreaker in Game 1, Erskine was slow out of the gates and Georgia College took advantage with a crooked number in the second inning. The Fleet got on the board with an RBI from
Kyndall Chandler in the third and fifth innings, but it was not enough to keep up with the Bobcats' offense in Game 2.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine finally has its home opener this weekend, when the Fleet will play four games on its home field in the 2024 Bearcat/Fleet Invitational, co-hosted by Erskine and Lander. The Fleet are in action on Friday with an early start, taking on Flagler College (9-3) at 10 a.m. before welcoming in Wingate University (8-3) shortly after at noon.
