HOW IT HAPPENED
Christian Rivera provided the scoring for the Fleet in the early innings, as his sacrifice fly opened the scoring in the first and then he hit his third home run of the weekend with a two-run shot in the third, giving Erskine a 3-0 lead. Chowan scored twice in the top of the fourth to get back within a run, but not for long as the Fleet put up another crooked number in their half of the fourth. After a
David Hernandez RBI groundout,
Carlos Gonzalez roped a triple into left field that scored a pair before he crossed home on an
Armando Becerra RBI groundout, making it 7-2 game. And the Fleet weren't done as they began a long, rewarding two-out rally.
Dalton Boyd followed Becerra with a mammoth solo home run over the right field fence, and after a pair of walks,
Ashby Smith hit a two-run double before scoring on a
Jude Littrell double that capped the inning as Erskine opened up an 11-2 lead. Rivera left the yard again in the sixth, and then Gonzalez added to his big day at the plate with a two-run single, extending the Fleet's lead to 14-4 after six innings.
Daniel Hernandez, Smith, and
Jaden James each RBIs in a three-run seventh inning, and then
Jaisen Randolph and
Daniel Hernandez unloaded on two-run big flies in the eighth as the Fleet offense flexed its muscles all afternoon long for a convincing 21-6 win.
THE PLAYER
Carlos Gonzalez was one of five Erskine players with a multi-hit game, going for 2-for-4 at the plate with a season-high 4 RBIs.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine remains at home, but a tall test awaits the Fleet, as they get set to take on the 2021 Division II National Champions, Wingate University (20-11, 10-4 SAC) on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Grier Field. Erskine knocked off the then top-ranked Bulldogs, 6-2, in Due West last season.
