Erskine Softball | Ingle, Patterson help Fleet earn doubleheader split at Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Erskine College softball team (7-4) split a doubleheader against Augusta University (11-7) at Jaguar Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Fleet won Game 1 thanks to a go-ahead home run from Brooke Patterson and a gem from Kaley Ingle before Augusta took Game 2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Erskine 3-1 Augusta
The first game of the afternoon quickly turned into a pitchers' duel as Kaley Ingle went toe-to-toe with Augusta's top starting pitcher. Ingle set down the first seven batters of the game and didn't allow a hit until one-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning. But, the Fleet were held in check offensively through the first five frames themselves. In the top half of the sixth, though, Amber Clark led off the inning with a single and Brooke Patterson finally broke the deadlock with a huge two-run home run that gave Erskine a 2-0 lead. Ingle worked around the one-out knock in the bottom half, and Erskine got some insurance thanks to a Kyndall Chandler RBI double, making it a 3-0 game. Augusta threatened in the bottom of the seventh, starting the inning with a single and an RBI double, bringing the tying run to the plate. But, Ingle finished strong, setting down the next three batters, including two via a strikeout, and sealed a 3-1 Erskine win in Game 1.

Game 2: Augusta 10-0 Erskine (Final / 5 innings)
The second game of the doubleheader belonged to the Jaguars, as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back, winning Game 2, 10-0.

THE PLAYER
Brooke Patterson went 2-for-4 in the middle of the order, including a clutch two-run home run that opened the scoring in the sixth inning, helping Erskine pick up a Game 1 victory.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine returns home for another non-conference doubleheader against Alderson Broaddus University (3-3) on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Fleet and Battlers split a doubleheader in Due West last season.
