Luize Valtere staved off a match point then dominated a third set tiebreaker to lead #3 Erskine past #7 Belmont Abbey in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Women's Tennis Championship on Friday. Valtere cruised to an easy first set win against Belmont Abbey's Elliot Peterson but dropped the second set, 6-4. The Fleet picked up the doubles point and then got single wins from First Team All-Conference performer

Czarina Aguirre. But after three Belmont Abbey wins in singles, the match was tied at 3-3 setting the stage for Valtere's heroics. The third team all-conference performer trailed the entire third set but continued to battle. Leading 5-4 in the 3rd, the Abbey's Peterson had match point but instead Valtere rocketed a forehand winner to tie the set at 5-5. After the pair split the next two games, Valtere jumped out early in the tiebreaker, cruising to a 7-1 win, allowing the Fleet to take a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Crusaders.
The win advanced Erskine to Saturday's 1 pm semifinal against #2 seeded Francis Marion. AS the #2 seed Francis Marion earned a bye into the semifinals.
